Oh, hey, what's this? An Author Alchemy ✨Laboratory✨???

Hey all!

First up, I hope you have all been well and finding ways to stay creative amidst the ongoing chaos of life, the universe, and everything.

My writing community is the thing that's been keeping me afloat lately—so thank you all for being a part of that. If you're looking for ways to get plugged in with other Author Alchemists, keep scrolling.

But first—I have an announcement!

I hinted in the last email that I was scheming up new ways to build community around education. Allow me to introduce Author Alchemy Laboratories, a series of one-day in-person workshops targeted around a single skill (or skill set) that will help you build your author career.

First up, T. Thorn Coyle is going to teach you how to make Kickstarter a valuable income stream in your business.

This will be a full-day in-person workshop where you'll leave with a draft of your sales page (including story and video script), a marketing plan, and the confidence that you'll knock your project out of the park.

Together we’ll brainstorm ideas, answer questions, share resources, and cheer each other on.

And by the end of the day, you’ll not only have an actionable strategy and solid first draft of your project, you’ll also have a network of other authors you can turn to for help, support, and word of mouth when your project goes live.

Head here to learn more.

Community!

I mentioned earlier that the writing community has been hugely helpful to me lately. Some of that is in person (if you're in PDX and want to get plugged into my regular monthly writer's social, let me know). But most of that has been virtual.

I've been creating an online space for business-minded authors like you all to hang out!

When I asked around at the conference in February, some people wanted Slack, some wanted Discord. I prefer Slack, but I'm warming to the idea of Discord—so I'm doing science.

Join whichever community you want. (Or both!) I'm basically active on both these days, so I'm happy to interact in either. If one ends up going quiet while the other takes off, I'll probably shelve it.

Other Cool Stuff!

Many of you will know Jennifer Hilt through her book The Trope Thesaurus, or seen her present at Author Nation, the Willamette Writers Conference, or any number of other events.

Maybe you also got to meet her at Author Alchemy Summit 2024!

In a few weeks, she's hosting an awesome new virtual conference: The Trope Conference. (Affiliate link, but rest assured I adore Jennifer's work and am a paid attendee of the conference!)

She's got a ton of awesome speakers lined up, and unlike most virtual cons, I'm actually looking forward to every single hour of programming.

So it's a good thing every talk will be recorded. :)

Even if you can't attend in person (the dates are April 5-6), the recordings will be available to you after. So...I'll see you there?

That's all for now! Keep writing, and don't forget to do science. ;)

Talk soon,

Jessie Kwak

Hey there! I've mentioned that my husband and I are renovating a house right now. It's been quite the project (one might say we bit off more than we could chew), but we're almost done! Which is great, because I'm ready to spend my summer evenings and weekends doing something besides sanding and painting. Oof. The house was built in 1912, and hasn't gotten much love over the century it's been around. As we've torn up floorboards and demolished ceilings and pulled out kitchen cabinets, I've...

Hey there! I've been thinking a lot lately about routine and how much it supports creative workflow. I'm a creature who thrives in habit, but craves novelty—which means I don't work well when I'm scattered, but it's tough to stick to a set schedule. I also tend to work in bursts, pouring my time into one project until I'm exhausted on it, then moving to the next. Which means that when I'm in a period of hyper-focus, other important things don't get done. How do you build a routine that...

Hey there! I'm currently on a research trip for Book 1 of my Danica Burns mystery series, and as I checked into the kinda remote Airbnb and started unpacking, I realized that the two books I was in the middle of reading both shared a theme: They were both thrillers about writers on research trips, staying alone in remote Airbnbs. *facepalm* The first is The Blackhouse by Carole Johnstone,* which is set on the Isle of Harris and Lewis in Scotland. It's about a girl who may or may not be...
