Hey there! This is a bit of a departure from my usual reader-focused email, but I know a good number of you on this list are also writers. (And I also know a lot of readers who appreciate a chance to get a look behind the scenes at an author's process. For free!) Which is why I'm excited to tell you about this event. Starting tomorrow (Oct 17th), Daniel David Wallace's annual plot summit is coming back—for year seven! Escape the Plot Forest is a great learning experience for writers and behind-the-scenes peek for readers, with five days of in-depth, serious presentations and interviews to solve your plot problems. Even better, you can register for free or with a reduced price ticket. When Daniel reached out to ask if he could interview me as one of the featured speakers, I was thrilled. Partly because I most often get asked to speak about productivity and the writing process—things I'm very happy to speak about! But Daniel asked me to talk about something totally different: Crisis. How do you put your characters into crisis? How do you get them out of crisis? How do you write through crisis yourself? We talked a lot about mystery plot points, detective character arcs, and—of course—how to finish the damn book. While the conversation was prerecorded, it will be played live on Tuesday, and I'll be in the comments to be part of the conversation. Here's how this event works. You can watch the whole event for free if you can attend each session live. Alternatively, you can upgrade (follow my link for the discounted ticket) to get a wide range of bonuses and extra sessions + ongoing replay access (watch whenever you want). Register today, and you'll be sent a short story guide full of great advice and prompts and a welcome pack full of highlights from past summits. The event itself runs through October 17th to the 21st. That's starting tomorrow! Daniel has been running this conference for 7 years, and many attendees buy their ticket for Escape the Plot Forest a year in advance. One reason writers keep coming back is that the summit has a firm code of conduct that makes it feel like a safe, welcoming environment for everyone. Plus, of course, tons of great information. You'll finish the summit with a whole new toolkit and roadmap for your novel, or better storytelling techniques for the stories in your nonfiction books. Hey there! I'm sending out my newsletter a little early because I don't want you to miss out on your last chance to get Last Roll of the Die. I've already sent a few emails about what this shorty story collection is, how high the value and quality are on it, and how you helped me to win the unofficial competition with the other authors at the start! This email is about two simple things: the last roll call for Last Roll of the Die, and what Twice Burned means to me. Unlike many crowdfunding...
Hey there! I got a very special delivery two days ago, when my mother-in-law (hi Jean!) sent me a copy of Harlan Coben's newest book, Plot Twist: Life, Craft, and the Messy First Draft. I haven't read a ton of Coben's mystery thrillers, but I've always enjoyed the ones I've picked up over the years—especially when I find one out in our Little Free Library. He's a really engaging writer, and as I settled down with Plot Twist and a cup of tea last night, I can already tell I'm going to enjoy...
