Five Fall Favorite...books I just can't put down! 🍂📚🍂

Hey there!

I love nothing more than cozying up under a blanket with a glass of wine or a cup of tea and a good book.

It's one of the reasons I always welcome the first rainy days of fall. :)

Since I've been snuggled up reading quite a bit lately, I thought I'd give you a short list of what's been on my mind in case you're looking for some inspiration.

And of course, I welcome suggestions!

My TBR is always looking for company.

For Spooky Season...

Each year, I create my version of an ancestor altar around Halloween/Dia de Muertos/Samhain, and this year we added two too-early faces to the mix.

So I've returned to reading Memento Mori by Joanna Ebenstein.

It's a lovely book—part study of different cultural approaches to death and celebrating life, and part reflective exercises for the reader.

The premise may sound morbid, but life is short, friends. I hope you live it to the fullest.

The book that kept me up all night...

I met Kate Alice Marshall at a conference a few years back, and I've read nearly everything she's written since.

I love her books—she has a great style, good characters, twisty plots, and almost everything is set in the Pacific Northwest, which I obviously love.

The Girls Before was no exception. I won't tell you anything about it, except that it kept me up all night earlier this week because I just had to finish it.

If you like fantasy + mystery...

I rarely read fantasy these days, but enough people recommended The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett that I finally picked it up. And I absolutely adored it.

At it's heart, the book is a mystery with a pair of unlikely detective partners (one of my favorite tropes!) It's set in a rich world with a lot of history and strangeness—but the story doesn't get lost in it.

I just finished reading the sequel, A Drop of Corruption, and it was every bit as good as the first one.

I'm looking forward to continuing the adventure with detectives Ana and Din!

If you like space + spies...

My friend Curtis C. Chen just released the fourth book in his Kangaroo series—Kangaroo Forth. I've mentioned these books here before, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the latest installment, so I figured I'd shout it out again!

Plus, book 1 (Waypoint Kangaroo) is currently on sale for only $0.99.

BTW, if you're in Portland, you can join Curtis and I for an event at Parallel Worlds Bookshop on Wednesday, November 18.

And, finally, a book I can't stop reading...

(Seriously. When will I be able to stop reading this book?????)

Sorry—couldn't help myself!

But I've been in the throes of revision and editing on the first Danica Burns book, Ashes to Ashes, so that's obviously on my mind.

Thank you to everyone who has preordered it so far on Amazon!

For those of you waiting for the non-Amazon pre-order, or who want to order signed print copies, that's now available via my website.

Go grab your copy!

Happy reading,

Jessie

Three Bites: a trio of spooky stories

Hey there! I was at a writing conference a couple weekends ago when a friend from Seattle came up to me with a very serious expression. "I was hoping you were going to be here," he said. "I wanted to talk to you about your story in Muddy Goose." Because my brain works the way it works, I immediately braced myself for whatever came next. Was my story riddled with typos? Did I write something offensive? Was he annoyed by my choice of setting? After all, the anthology he was talking about, The...

Hey there! This is a bit of a departure from my usual reader-focused email, but I know a good number of you on this list are also writers. (And I also know a lot of readers who appreciate a chance to get a look behind the scenes at an author's process. For free!) Which is why I'm excited to tell you about this event. Starting tomorrow (Oct 17th), Daniel David Wallace's annual plot summit is coming back—for year seven! Escape the Plot Forest is a great learning experience for writers and...
